VW Exec Finally Plead Guilty For Emissions Cheating Looking Ahead to Up To 169 Years Prison Sentence!

September 17, 2017

Volkswagen is currently feeling the wrath of the media as people cannot stop talking about the fact that one of Volkswagen’s executive has been arrested. Schmidt is one of the six executives at Volkswagen and was arrested on January 7th on the basis of federal conspiracy charges, till date Schmidt is currently behind bars as the facts of this case keep surfacing. According to the charges, Schmidt allegedly created software that was designed to cheat emissions tests and included it in their latest diesel vehicles.

However, last Thursday a federal judge in Detroit has rejected Schmidt’s request to be released on a bond. This further exonerates the fact that the court has substantial evidence to hold Schmidt behind bars. Now Oliver Schmidt has pleaded guilty to emissions cheatings as he was charged with eleven different felony counts. Due to the staggering amount of charges on Schmidt, a federal prosecutor has stated that he could face approximately one hundred and sixty-nine years in prison!

This statement has shaken the entire Volkswagen hierarchy as their chief of environmental and engineering center is currently behind bars and it seems that he might be there for an extremely long time now. Volkswagen is now facing the wrath of the media as this indictment is being heavily publicized, this notoriety will without a doubt have an effect on their sales, overall market reach and the goodwill of the company.

How are Schmidt’s lawyers tackling the situation?

Schmidt’s lawyers are still adamant that he should be released on the basis of bail as these charges have still yet not been enforced. His lawyer further stated that since Schmidt just got back from vacation he is not a flight risk and should be released from jail immediately until the court reaches their final verdict.

They further argue that Schmidt’s charges are much weaker than the charges suggest, that this scheme has been present eight years before Schmidt even allegedly joined.  However, the judiciary has stated that the Government has substantial evidence that Schmidt has played a key role in the scheme. Not to mention, another executive has pleaded guilty, who had also apparently agreed to help with the case against Schmidt.

The US government did not file charges against Schmidt until December 30 and they claimed that Schmidt was fully aware of his actions while designing software that can cheat emissions tests. The day Schmidt was charged; Volkswagen pled guilty to several criminal charges and paid a substantial amount of $4.3 billion in damages and fines.
