Continental Invents Better Brakes for Electric Cars
Electric cars have recently been introduced to the public at large and have become the rage in the market as people simply cannot get over the fact that how much fuel efficient electric cars provide. The first electric car was released a couple of years ago, but since then the market has been flooded with a variety of electric vehicles from different manufacturers.
Each of these automobile manufacturers has instilled their personal persona in their vehicles and have added features to make their vehicles stand out from the rest of the pack! Although the electric car industry is currently booming, there is one slight drawback associated with electric cars; yes we are talking about their braking systems.
Electric vehicles actually use a regenerative braking system which basically helps stop the vehicle by converting its kinetic energy so that it can either be used later or immediately. While conventional braking system converts unwanted kinetic energy into waste through friction created by the brake or is dissipated as heat in resistors.
However, the regenerative braking system present in electric vehicles cannot bring the car to a complete stop, which is why most people avoid investing in electric vehicles. Moreover, this dilemma has now been curtailed by Continental as they have invented a new species of brakes for electric cars.
What Exactly Has Continental Invented?
Recently Continental has announced a new wheel concept which has been particularly designed for electric vehicles. According to their representatives, this braking will maximize the efficiency of regenerative braking and provides easier maintenance. He further stated that this braking system optimizes the wheel and brake efficiency by a substantial margin!
This concept basically uses an aluminum rim and an aluminum center star combined with a brake disc. A brake caliper is used to clamp the inside of the disc since this brake caliper is installed inside of the framework, a larger caliper can be used to increase the efficiency of the vehicle. Furthermore, since most of these parts are made out of aluminum, this braking system is quite light compared to conventional regenerative braking systems.
If that’s not enough, Continental claims that most of the components used in this braking system are designed to withstand corrosion making it a long-term solution for all electric car braking systems. Since most of the parts are made of aluminum they can withstand a substantial amount of wear and tear, which is one of the prime reasons why this braking system does not require periodic maintenance. According to Continental this braking system only requires occasional pads which will be offered at cost effective prices in order to help everyone get the most out of their braking systems.
However, the most profound aspect of this braking system is the fact that this system can actually bring the vehicle to a complete halt, which is something that eluded electric cars for years now. Moreover, this innovation will definitely help revamp the electric car industry as now manufacturers can make safer vehicles!
