General Motors – The History

The Inception
General Motors began its operations in the mid of the year 1908. It started off on a bigger scale as opposed to most of the auto manufacturers we see today. GM began as a holding company and did not take even the tiniest bit of time in acquiring a range of already operating companies like Buick, Cadillac, and McLaughlin etc. A few years later, it acquired Chevrolet, engulfing a major share of the market.
The Leap
The American giant showed no signs of stopping. Only in the year 1918, the company had expanded its workforce from 49 to 85 thousand. If all the takeovers were not enough, the company bought Vauxhall and Opel. Basically, General Motors was the parent company of almost every carmaker at the time.
This reign continued for a little over four decades. There was simply no one to compete with the mighty General Motors. However, that was up until 1973.
The Rough Patch
The 1970s were not as smooth for the American giant as the past several decades had been. This was a crucial period for the automobile industry in general. It was all due to the structural changes that were in place within the industry. The problem for GM was that it had become quite large, and it didn’t play as an assistive factor this time. The bigger the company is, the more difficult it is for it to change directions.
The change was essentially brought by environmental agencies who forced carmakers to revive their entire processes to make them friendlier towards the environment. As if the blow wasn’t enough for GM to handle, eastern automotive companies began penetrating the US automobile industry as well.
The Current Scenario
Almost everything seemed to go downhill for the company then. It now had to sustain its production processes, adopt a few newer trends, and do all this while fighting the influx of international carmakers. To cope up, it began laying off and downgrading on numerous aspects. As things became stable, a financial downfall hit the company in the 1990s. In the beginning of the decade, the company had fallen under a pile of debt but managed to pull itself out by the turn of the millennium.
General Motors is still considered as an automotive giant in the global automotive industry, but it is not as big as it was back in the initial four to five decades of its inception.
