Battery Electric Cars: How They Work?

February 15, 2015

Automobiles are among the many paradigms of technological advancements that have gone on to change the face of the earth. Since the inception of the first car, the automobile industry has come a long way. Things that were once a figment of imagination and aspects of Bond’s exotic cars have become ordinary to us.

One of the technological advancement in recent times has been the entrance of electric cars. They come with eye-catching aesthetics, smart engines, efficient mileages, and almost everything else that enhances your driving experience. But have you ever thought about how these battery-operated electric cars even work?

Let us look into the way these contemporary battery based electric engines operate.

Charging the Battery

A battery gotchas electric vehicle, as the name states, uses a battery in order to generate power for the electric motor engine to work. They work like any other battery-based device like your cell-phone. As the gadget goes out of juice, you go on to charge it by plugging it into an electrical socket.

Similarly, the batteries installed in an electric vehicle require a recharge which is done by using grid electricity. This means you can plug your car into a socket in the wall. You can even use a dedicated charging unit in order to get the batteries charged.

How does it work?

The way these battery electric cars work is quite simple. There are three major components that play a part: the controller, the electric motor, and the batteries. As you start the car, the controller immediately takes power from the batteries in order to deliver it to the motor.

The accelerator is then attached to the potentiometers, which tells the battery the amount of power it is to deliver. In order to ensure safety, there are two potentiometers installed that individually check to see if the signals being received are equal. Otherwise, it does not operate.

The DC controller also has a kind of on and off switch attached to the accelerator. When you put your foot down on the throttle, the switch turns on and turns off just as you take your foot off the paddle. The potentiometers also pulse so you enjoy an eased driving experience. They sense the pressure you put on the throttle and regulates power to the motor accordingly.

The Benefit

The reason why electric vehicles have become so popular recently is that they offer better economy while being environment-friendly. In fact, these electric cars don’t even have a tailpipe for exhaustion. The fact that you don’t have to spend an additional buck on gas stations also saves you a great deal of time and money. According to an estimate, people driving electric vehicles can easily save drivers around a thousand dollars per annum.
