Japanese sports cars arrived on the American market around the 1960s and really took off by the 1990s. Stylish models like the Acura NSX and Toyota Supra caught eyes and interest. Since then, Japanese sports cars continue to dominate thanks to their sleek designs, high-quality engines, reliability, relatively affordable price points and performance. To wit: Honda sold more than 4.7 million cars in 2016. That same year, Toyota took the top spot on the list of the world’s most valuable car brands and the company is estimated to manufacture about 11 million cars in 2023. This success is attributed in part to innovative designs and high quality imported engines from Japan. Let’s take a spin through some of the headliners.

Nissan 370Z. The two-seat coupe looks great and is equipped with rear-wheel-drive and a 320 horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 engine. This kind of performance is evidence that it’s a good look to buy Japanese engines.

Mazda MX-5 Miata. This roadster was first introduced in 1989 and remains one of the most lightweight imported Japanese sports cars, allowing the 167 horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to reach high speeds with ease.

Toyota 2000GT. It resembles a Jaguar, nicknamed the “Japanese E-type,” and boasts a 2.0-liter six-cylinder engine capable of hitting 136 miles per hour. By the time it was retired in 1970 after just 337 cars were built, the 2000GT had set several speed records and appeared in a James Bond movie.

Autozam AZ-1. Two words: gullwing doors. It doesn’t get much cooler than that. Autozam is a Mazda brand known for high quality engines and the AZ-1 was built by Suzuki with a 657-cc turbocharged engine.

Nissan GT-R. If you’re looking to buy Japanese engines, the GT-R offers an impressive one and this model is still on the market. Its 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged engine produces 470lb ft of torque and requires a focused driver.

Lexus LFA. Practically the stuff of legend, all 500 editions of what’s been deemed a “supercar” are believed to have been purchased. With rear-wheel-drive and a ten-cylinder, 552 horsepower 4.8-liter engine that produces 354lb ft of torque, it reaches 60 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds. Should you go looking for engines for sale and find one of these on the lot, consider yourself lucky.
