Emissions Fraud Lands Volkswagen A $2.8 Billion Fine
Tampering with diesel-powered vehicles to cheat on government emissions tests has landed Volkswagen, the German automaker, a $2.8 billion fine. During a hearing in Detroit federal court on Friday, April 21, Judge Sean Cox sentenced Volkswagen, a little over a month after the automaker pleaded guilty to criminal charges arising from emissions cheating.

Earlier this year Volkswagen made the admission that it had cheated for nearly a decade with illegal software to pass government emissions tests and deceive U.S officials. This did not only serve as a stark admission of guilt in front of the courts but also its large clientele around the world.
$2.8 Billion Fine Isn’t Where Volkswagen’s Troubles End
The $2.8 billion fine is a small part of the costs that the German automaker will have to bear to win the trust of the authorities and its customers. The reputation it has tarnished took decades to build and will be harder to rebuild. The ruling made by Judge Sean Cox has forced Volkswagen to spend almost $15 billion on buybacks and environmental remediation. Moreover, the carmaker had to make fresh recruitments as a lot of its employees ended up in jail after the judgment.
In addition to the payment of the fine, the judgment ordered monitoring of Volkswagen’s regulatory-compliance practices for a minimum of three years by an independent body. To settle the probe by the U.S Department of Justice, Volkswagen agreed to pay a total of $4.3 billion, including a separate $1.5 billion civil penalty.
In spite of paying this settlement fee, the German carmaker will be on probation for the next three years. Volkswagen has agreed to cooperate with continuing U.S. government probes and prosecutions of individuals linked to the fraud.
How It All Came About
Volkswagen was questioned about the cheating software by U.S regulators after researchers at West Virginia University found discrepancies in testing and real-world emissions of harmful nitrogen oxide from the Volkswagen’s engines. Eventually, the automaker admitted that it had used illegal software to turn pollution controls on during testing and off while on the road.
Cheating Is Never the Solution
As Volkswagen discovered, you can never get away with cheating and when you get caught there are bound to be repercussions. So, if your vehicle(s) is likely to fail emission tests, get replacement auto engines rather than try to cheat your way out of the situation.
