GM Wants to Test Vehicles on Public Streets
General Motors is certainly a big name when it comes to the automotive industry. The American automaker manufactures a range of automobiles from elite SUVs to mid-range sedans and hatchbacks. General Motors now wishes to take another and a little different step in order to prepare automobiles that are perfect for use on the streets. GM wants to test its vehicles on the road while keeping them anonymous.
The President’s Stance
Dan Ammann—the President of General Motors—last month requested the state and local government to allow them to test autonomous vehicles out on the streets. He believes that by doing this, the automaker will be able to better comprehend the aspects that make a car more comfortable in the hands of a general user. During an address, Dan Ammann said,
“To make autonomous vehicles the best they can be and the safest they can be, we really need to be testing on public streets”
He further elaborated that the roads can surely be geo-fenced, but their being public streets is vital in the experiment by the automaker giant. GM wants to test their cars out in the real world, before launching them to be used in it.
General Motor’s Interest
GM has always been in the best interest of their end user—no wonder they have manufactured some of the best automobiles on the road at the moment. They are posing the same concern and want to elevate the practicality of their cars by testing them in the real environment they are made for. This initiative is supported by many as it will allow the auto manufacturer to produce better, safer, and more user-friendly cars.
The Technology
The American manufacturer has always been on the forefront of introducing contemporary and futuristic tech on their cars. The Cruise Technology is just one of the many examples in this regard. General Motors has been working on writing a new chapter for the automobile industry: it recently invested a $1 billion for the research and development of vehicles that have the potential to drive themselves.
The Cruise tech in Chevrolet Bolt—an electric car by GM—is a small aspect of the bigger picture the American automaker pursues.
The Efforts
GM President Ammann also talked about the US infrastructure. It has been stated more than several times that the US needs amendments in the infrastructure. When asked, the GM President stated that he surely looks forward to the investments in infrastructure, but that does not mean that the company should stop working on its plans and become a subject to infrastructural changes.
He put the focus on the fact that the US President Trump has repeatedly promised more investments in US infrastructure and that the infrastructural change is bound to happen sooner or later. But GM wants to continue working on its technological aspects so that so it is able to serve the current environment. In other words, General Motors does not want to remain dependent upon the investments on any infrastructural change.
